The US Youth Soccer Coach Training Track

There are an estimated 17,582,000 soccer players in the U.S. and 7,881,000 of those players are under the age of 12. However, fewer than 20% of youth soccer coaches have received any type of training. Furthermore, recent studies show that more than 73% of all kids who play organized sports quit by the the age of 13. WyoSoccer recognizes this and provides its affiliated associations several levels of coach training.

At the state level there are three certificate courses. They are the two Youth Module courses and the “E”. To pass a certificate course a coach must attend the course in its entirety and participate in the sessions.

Wyoming Youth Soccer conducts the:

  • Youth Module I: a 4 – 6 hour course for coaches working with children in the U6 (3 v 3 game format) and U8 (4 v 4 game format) age groups. The course includes both classroom (theory) and field (practical) sessions.

  • Youth Module II: a 7 – 9 hour course for coaches working with children in the U10 (6 v 6 game format) and U12 (8 v 8 game format) age groups. The course includes both classroom (theory) and field (practical) sessions.

  • “E” Certificate: an 18 hour course for coaches working with pubescent children in the U13 to U15 age groups in the 11 v 11 game format. The course includes both classroom (theory) and field (practical) sessions. The course includes a practice practical sessions for the coaches on the field.

In addition, there is one license course presented at the state level; the “D” License. To pass, a coach must attend the course in its entirety and participate in all of the sessions. Additionally the coach must pass the course examinations.

  • “D” License – a 36-hour course for coaches working with adolescents in the U16 to U19 age groups in the 11 v 11 game format. There are 3 possible outcomes to the course; pass with a national “D”, pass with a state “D” or fail. The course includes both classroom (theory) and field (practical) sessions. The course includes a practice practical sessions for the coaches on the field. The examinations include written tests, video test and a practical coaching test on the field.

US Youth Soccer conducts the “Y” or National Youth License. The “Y” License focuses on the nature of children and the adjustments adults must make to coach them. The course curriculum covers four to twelve-year-olds. Each day of the course the focus is on one of the traditional soccer age groups - U6, U8, U10, and U12. And, each day children of the appropriate age-group are brought to the course site for the candidates to work with them in a practice training session. The candidates are videotaped while coaching the kids and the video is reviewed with each candidate to aid in the education of the coach. The course combines both classroom (theory) and field (practical) sessions. The course concludes with written, oral, and practical examinations. The “Y” License course is six days in length.

Additionally US Youth Soccer offers continuing education for coaches through the Coaches Connection. Twice a month e-mails are sent to subscribers of the Coaches Connection. At the beginning of each month a “Connection” message is sent that includes sample lesson plans for the U6, U8, U10, and U12 age groups. In the middle of the month a “Connection” message is sent to subscribers that includes tips for administrators, coaches, parents, and referees. Subscribers of Coaches Connection may attend clinics offered by US Youth Soccer at a discount. Clinics for coaches, administrators, and referees are held at the annual US Youth Soccer adidas Workshop and Coaches Convention. Some of the best educators in youth soccer, from around the world, present clinics at this convention, which is held in a different region of the country.

U. S. Soccer – the national governing body for soccer is the United States, conducts the “C”, “B”, and “A” License courses. These courses focus on coaching teenaged and adult players. Each course is nine days in length. The courses combine both classroom (theory) and field (practical) sessions. The courses conclude with written, oral, and practical examinations. The U. S. Soccer National Coaching Schools are conducted in January, June, and July of each year.

U. S. Soccer also conducts Continuing Education clinics. These C.E.U. clinics are offered throughout the country at various times of the year and often in conjunction with a
U. S. National Team match. C.E.U. clinics are mandatory for “A” License coaches.

Contact WYS if your club would like to schedule a clinic or if you would like someone to come to your club's coaching meeting to give a presentation.
